A branding and website designer who loves playful and cute designs. In this little diary, I want to share with you what I’ve learned from turning my dream business into a reality.
Hey, I'm Barbara!
My work
If you’re building a brand for your business, you’ve probably heard design terms you are unfamiliar with, like “logo suite.” You know what a logo is, but why would you need a few of them? How many logos does your business actually need? Why isn’t it enough to just download a random icon for your Instagram profile and expect success?
Let me explain why a logo suite is important and how it can help your brand, in simple language for non-designers.
First of all, you should know that your logo is going to be one of the most (if not the most) essential part of your brand identity. It’s often the first thing potential customers will see when they interact with your brand, and the way it connects with them can make a huge difference in whether they choose to do business with you. Basically, your logo is just as important as the product or service you are offering.
That’s why your logo needs to be flexible and work in different ways, and this is where a logo suite comes in. A logo suite is just a set of different logo versions, each one created for a specific purpose. With these different versions, your brand will look cohesive and recognizable in any situation, which helps build trust and familiarity with your audience and connects you with dream clients.
If you only have one logo, you’ll quickly realize it doesn’t always fit into every situation, and here’s why:
Let’s talk about the logo variations typically included in a logo suite and how to use each:
The primary logo is the heart of your brand’s visual identity and is often the most complete and recognizable version. This logo usually includes your brand name and may have a tagline or symbol to fully represent your brand. It’s like the “face” of your brand, the first one people will see and associate with your business. Some of the uses could be:
The secondary logo is a simpler version of your primary logo and is designed for situations where the full logo might not fit well. It’s usually more compact or stacked but still keeps the main elements. This logo usually works great for:
A submark is a minimal, compact version of your primary logo, I like to think it looks like a cousin. It’s often featuring your brand name or initials and keeps the main elements of your brand but works well in tighter spaces, such as:
A brandmark is a simplified icon or symbol that represents your brand without text. It’s a highly recognizable graphic element that carries your brand even at a small size. Brandmarks work well in places like:
When you’re building your brand, it sounds tempting to go and DIY a logo to save some money. Yes, even designing it yourself sounds fun, at least until you see another 100 businesses with the same logo from that Canva template, and until you realize nobody would recognize or remember your brand, even after seeing your content on social media many times.
Designers do more than just create pretty images, we craft a visual identity that should support your brand’s goals. This includes understanding your brand personality, target audience, and long-term vision, which won’t be possible to translate into visuals on your own without experience in this field. Just let the pros do what they do best.
Here’s how a professional designer can help your business:
In summary, while a DIY design sounds so easy, investing in a professional designer to create a comprehensive brand identity is what can provide you with the recognition, flexibility, and professional image needed to stand out in the market.
Your logo suite should grow as your business grows. It’s a good idea to check in on your logo every few years or whenever something big changes in your business, like launching new products or shifting your focus. This helps make sure your brand still feels fresh and connects with your audience. Updating your logo doesn’t always mean a full redesign, but making small changes to keep it modern and relevant.
